Situated just off the Virginia Blue Ridge
Parkway, in an area of many assets but few beds
for travelers, Meadowood is "...just what a bed
and breakfast should be," to quote a sated
guest. We had just finished a hearty breakfast
which included some redolent cinnamon rolls that
had been on our minds since we awoke.
Table talk had centered
around our activities. One visitor spent the
previous day fishing with the host's son, while
a couple had an anniversary dinner at nearby
Chateau Morrisette Winery. Today they were
headed to Mabry Mill, just minutes down the
parkway, for handcraft demonstrations and fiddle
music. I had been to an open-air concert in
nearby Floyd and, with fellow birdwatchers,
anticipated the spectacle of thermal-riding
hawks and eagles above Rock Castle Gorge.
Our hosts were Leona and
Frank Warren, daughter Stephanie, and son
Frankie, with an unobtrusive cat and dog
available for a mutually beneficial pat.
Historically, most Meadowood
guests come from Virginia or North Carolina;
however, a sidebar in a recent Los Angeles
Times Sunday travel section revealed a
Californian reader's enthusiasm for this Blue
Ridge retreat.
